I’m going to try to write a post every couple days throughout the entirety of this trip. Previously, I’ve kept personal travel journals to document thoughts and experiences throughout a trip. Travel has dramatically altered my worldview, and based on a talk from Derek Sivers I’ve decided to make the journal for this vagabonding escapade public.
As I write, I sit at the Boston airport enjoying a layover before my flight to Manchester. From there, I fly to Limoges where I will catch a train to Gourdon to connect with my girlfriend, Louise, and her family. Overall, my poor planning will result in a 36 (ish) hour travel day. We’ll spend the next two weeks in the countryside at her grandmothers house near Gourdon.
Louise and I recently bought flights to Mumbai for August 25th. We have absolutely no plans other than eating as much curry as possible and trying to get to Nepal by October 1st.
I’m a bit nervous about meeting Louise’s extended family as my french is basic and it will be trial by fire. I let a family friend from Wisconsin know my feelings, and she remarked how it was “so typically french” that they didn’t speak very much english. I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of someone who only speaks one language themselves chastising someone else for the same thing.
